Is There a Universal Canoe or Kayak Loader?

Written by Hitchweb Team Wednesday, March 1, 2017

Our customer asked us: I'm planning to do a lot of kayaking this Spring and in the past I've found it difficult to load the kayak onto the roof on my own. Is there an easier way to do this?

Good news - there is a product from Rhino Rack called the Universal Side Loader that is designed specifically to help with this problem! The universal side loader makes it possible for one person to easily load a kayak, canoe, surfboard or any gear onto the roof on their own. In this kit there is a padded bar that will clamp onto your crossbar and extend past the side of your vehicle. This will hold the load up so you can pivot the other end onto the roof of your vehicle. Also included is a telescoping pole - perfect for rocky/uneven terrain and adding extra support for heavier loads.

Why Can't I Reverse With My Trailer Coupler?

Written by Hitchweb Team Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Why can't I reverse with my trailer coupler?

As Standard Couplers do not store brake fluid, It is not possible for a standard coupler to reverse as backing up puts pressure on the lever and causes the brake to lock up when trying to reverse.

There are two ways to get around this problem:

1)  Different than a standard couper, some Surge Couplers come with a 'brake lockout lever' and therefore are able to reverse, just flip the switch prior to backing up

2) 'Reverse Brake Lock-Out Solenoid' is an add on which when installed, provides an outlet for the fluid rather than pushing it through the brake lines.

If you are interested in purchasing one, contact our team as we need to know the brand and model of your surge coupler.

Bed Liner Removal For Fifth Wheel Hitch Installation

Written by Hitchweb Team Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Do I need to remove my bed liner to install a fifth wheel hitch?

Bed Liners

As fifth wheel hitch bed rails require direct metal to metal contact with the truck bed and to avoid deterioration of the liner under the rails which could cause the rails to become loose, the plastic liner would need to be trimmed away.

If your vehicle has a spray-in type liner, you can install the fifth wheel hitch rails directly on top of it.
